Yokai is a premium whiskey experience from Mugen Spirit curated by co-founder Kojin Tashiro, weaving Japanese mythology and lore into carefully selected bourbon barrels. Yokai are a lineage of mythological creatures, tricksters, and warriors. Each expression depicts a different Yokai.

The Yokai series continues with an extraordinary single barrel whiskey honoring Kuko, a Japanese fox spirit who serves Inari, the Shinto god of rice and prosperity. Kitsune possess many supernatural powers, such as shapeshifting and possession. Typically known for their fierce intelligence and trickster ways, these fox spirits sometimes use these powers for good (Zenko) and sometimes for bad (Yoko). It all depends on the kitsune.

As a good fox progresses on its journey of service, it gains powers and up to nine tails, but the journey doesn't end there. A kitsune must live 3,000 years as a zenko to become a kuko, or sky fox. As a kitsune ascends to the sky to become a deity, it gains the powers of clairvoyance and telepathy, becoming godlike spirits who can see the future with complete clarity.

• Flavor notes:
  • Nose: immediate smell of hazelnut coffee, followed by vanilla extract, maple syrup and hints of cherry compote. Slightly reminiscent scent of Valentines day heart candies.
  • Palate: brown sugar and oak initially hits on the front end. Medicinal cherry married with raspberry candy follows. Slowly but surely finishes with chocolate, caramel and a little coffee, like drinking an espresso while eating Rolos.
